The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever recites the two verses from the end of Surah al-Baqarah in a night, they suffice him.”
Notes
Note two details in this wording. First, the time is “fi laylatin” — in a night. It is not restricted to bedtime; any recitation within the night satisfies the wording, including an evening wirid. There is no established basis for reciting it in the morning.
Second, the wording is “al-ayatayn” — the two final verses, that is al-Baqarah 285–286. The Ma’thurat arrangement recites 284–286 (three verses); verse 284 is not covered by this hadith.
Scholars differ over the meaning of “kafatahu”: that they suffice him against the harms of that night, or suffice him in place of the night prayer, or both.
