حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ عَوْنٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْعُمَيْسِ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ: «مَنْ قَرَأَ عَشْرَ آيَاتٍ مِنْ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ، لَمْ يَدْخُلْ ذَلِكَ الْبَيْتَ شَيْطَانٌ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ، حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ: أَرْبَعاً مِنْ أَوَّلِهَا، وَآيَةُ الْكُرْسِيِّ، وَآيَتَانِ بَعْدَهَا، وَثَلَاثٌ خَوَاتِيمُهَا»، أَوَّلُهَا: {لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ}.
Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud said: “Whoever recites ten verses of Surah al-Baqarah in a night, no devil will enter that house that night until morning: four from its beginning, Ayat al-Kursi, the two verses after it, and its three closing verses” — the first of which is: {To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth}.

Acting on a weak report in fada’il al-a‘mal
Imam al-Nawawi writes in al-Adhkar: “The scholars among the hadith specialists, the jurists and others have said: it is permitted and encouraged to act, in matters of merit and of encouragement and warning, upon a weak hadith — so long as it is not fabricated (mawdu‘).” As for rulings such as the lawful and unlawful, sale, marriage and divorce, these may rest only on a sahih or hasan report.
The conditions Ibn ‘Allan states in al-Futuhat al-Rabbaniyya (1/84): (1) the report is neither fabricated nor severely weak; (2) it falls under an established general principle; and (3) when acting on it one does not hold it to be established from the Prophet (peace be upon him), but acts out of precaution.

The chain is munqati‘ (broken): the editor Marzuq al-Zahrani notes that al-Sha‘bi met Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (r.a.) but did not hear from him directly.
This report is mawquf — in both books above it is the saying of Ibn Mas‘ud (r.a.) himself, not of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Sheikh Redwan cites a marfu‘ version (traced to the Prophet) from al-Tabarani and al-Hakim; Qawiy has not yet checked those texts, so there is no card for it.
This is the report that gives the Ma’thurat its shape: the four opening verses (al-Baqarah 1–5), Ayat al-Kursi (255), the two after it (256–257), and the three closing verses (284–286) — cards 2, 3, 28 and 4.
