‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir said: We were responsible for herding the camels. When my turn came, I brought them back in the evening and found the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) standing and speaking to the people. I caught these words of his: “There is no Muslim who performs wudu and does it well, then stands and prays two rak‘ahs, turning to them with his heart and his face, except that Paradise becomes his due.” I said: “How excellent this is!” Someone in front of me said: “What he said before it was even better.” I looked, and it was ‘Umar. He said: “I saw that you have only just arrived. He said: ‘None of you performs wudu and completes it fully, then says: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the servant of Allah and His Messenger — except that the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he may enter through whichever of them he wishes.’” In Muslim’s next chain (through Zayd ibn al-Hubab), ‘Uqbah narrates the same, except that the Prophet said: “Whoever performs wudu and says: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.”

Notes
Hisnul Muslim chapter 9, dua 13, takes its wording from Muslim’s second chain (Sunnah.com 234b): “wahdahu la sharika lah … ‘abduhu wa rasuluh”. The first chain (234a) carries the full account, with the wording “‘abdullahi wa rasuluh”.
Fuad ‘Abd al-Baqi numbers both chains together as 234, the number Hisnul Muslim cites (Muslim 1/209). Sunnah.com splits them into 234a and 234b.
Al-Tirmidhi’s version of this hadith adds “Allahumma-j‘alni minat-tawwabin…”. That addition is graded differently; see the Tirmidhi 55 card.
