‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (r.a.) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever performs wudu and does it well, then says: ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. O Allah, make me among those who repent much, and make me among those who purify themselves’ — the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he may enter through whichever of them he wishes.”
Grade
Idtirab (inconsistency) in its chain
Imam al-Tirmidhi
Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi 55
He adds that little is authentic from the Prophet on this topic, and quotes al-Bukhari: Abu Idris did not hear anything from ‘Umar. Other narrators transmit it from Abu Idris through ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir, as in Sahih Muslim.
Sahih al-Tirmidhi 1/18
The checking cited in the Hisnul Muslim footnote.
Established (at the end of wudu)
Ibn al-Qayyim
Zad al-Ma‘ad 1/195
He holds that nothing is established from the Prophet about dhikr over wudu except the basmalah at its start and, at its end, the testimony followed by this supplication.
Hasan jayyid (the addition)
Ibn Baz
Majmu‘ al-Shuruh al-Fiqhiyyah
He judged the addition “O Allah, make me among those who repent much…” a good, sound addition.
Acting on a weak report in fada’il al-a‘mal
Imam al-Nawawi writes in al-Adhkar: “The scholars among the hadith specialists, the jurists and others have said: it is permitted and encouraged to act, in matters of merit and of encouragement and warning, upon a weak hadith — so long as it is not fabricated (mawdu‘).” As for rulings such as the lawful and unlawful, sale, marriage and divorce, these may rest only on a sahih or hasan report.
The conditions Ibn ‘Allan states in al-Futuhat al-Rabbaniyya (1/84): (1) the report is neither fabricated nor severely weak; (2) it falls under an established general principle; and (3) when acting on it one does not hold it to be established from the Prophet (peace be upon him), but acts out of precaution.

Notes
Hisnul Muslim chapter 9, dua 14, takes the supplication “Allahumma-j‘alni minat-tawwabin…” from this hadith. The testimony before it, and the promise of the eight gates, are established without it in Sahih Muslim 234.
The request echoes the Quran: “Indeed, Allah loves those who repent much and loves those who purify themselves” (al-Baqarah 2:222).
A supporting route from Thawban (r.a.), in al-Tabarani’s al-Mu‘jam al-Awsat and Ibn al-Sunni’s ‘Amal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah, carries the same supplication. Al-Haythami (Majma‘ al-Zawa’id 1/244) notes that he found no biography for its narrator Musawwar ibn Muwarri‘.
