Abdullah ibn Khubayb said: We went out on a rainy, intensely dark night looking for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to lead us in prayer, and we found him. He said: “Say.” I said nothing. He said again: “Say.” I said nothing. He said again: “Say.” I asked: “O Messenger of Allah, what shall I say?” He said: “{Qul huwa Allahu ahad} and the two surahs of refuge, evening and morning, three times — they will suffice you against everything.”

Himpunan Risalah, footnote no. 96
He attributes it to Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa’i — all three verified: Abu Dawud 5082, al-Tirmidhi 3575, al-Nasa’i 5428.
Notes
This is the basis for three consecutive Ma’thurat cards: al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and al-Nas — recited three times, morning and evening.
Al-Nasa’i’s wording (5428) differs slightly: “thalathan yakfika kulla shay’”, and it opens with “A drizzle and darkness came upon us”.
Footnotes 93, 94 and 95 in Himpunan Risalah gloss terms in Surah al-Falaq (Falaq, Ghasiq, Naffathat) rather than citing a hadith, so they remain notes only.
